The Merck family, as the founders of the company, holds the majority of the shares in Merck, which is known worldwide as "Merck", with the exception of the United States and Canada, where Merck's three main areas of competence: pharmaceuticals and healthcare, life sciences, and electronic technology are known as "EMD Serono" and "Merck" in the respective countries. In these two countries, Merck's three main fields: pharmaceuticals and health, life sciences and electronics technology are respectively called "EMD Serono", "MilliporeSigma" and "EMD Electronics". Merck has a history of 89 years in China, with its first subsidiary established in Shanghai in 1933.
Merck has more than 4,500 employees in China and 21 registered companies in Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Wuxi, Suzhou and Nantong. China is one of Merck's most important strategic countries in the world and has become a global innovation center for Merck. In recent years, Merck has invested EUR 170 million in the pharmaceuticals, healthcare and life sciences business in Nantong and EUR 80 million in the electronics business in Shanghai, and EUR 44 million in the electronics business in Shanghai. In addition, Merck has set up a global biopharmaceutical R&D center in Beijing, a display materials R&D center and a life science laboratory in Shanghai, and a lithography materials R&D center in Suzhou. Merck has set up two China Innovation Centers and one innovation site in Shanghai and Guangdong respectively.
